The topic of this blog post is: things that have been away for a while. Exhibit A: me!

I had every intention of continuing the Snowflake Challenge/Year in Review set of posts I began in January, but my work - which was already semi-upended by the time I got the first of those posts out - became even more upended after that. I wanted to at least post Part 2 of my 'Looking back at fannish goals for 2024' two-parter – it feels weird to have Part 1 hanging out there without a counterpart – but I haven't been able to make it a priority, and I didn't want to add "Dreamwidth posting" to the list of things I was stressed about.

At the same time, I felt weird moving onto another topic and shutting that door altogether. Still, since it's now June (ack), I'm officially freeing myself from the burden of picking up that dropped thread in favour of posting about other things, because I miss it! So, hi - how is everyone doing?

Since I last checked in, I've found time to keep up a few things here and there like adding to my fanworks archive (not much, but I archived a few things for March Meta Matters and a couple more in May, while also making some tweaks to my meta organisation) and writing drabbles (I took part in the Small Fandoms Drabblethon again and then the spring round of Seasons of Drabbles). I've got into some new things, too, like the animated series Hazbin Hotel – but it's an 'old' thing I intend to talk about for the second half of this post.

Exhibit B: The Strange Case of Starship Iris, one of my all-time favourite podcasts, which has showed up in a few of my posts here (such as this pimp post I cross-posted, which is a good shout if you want context for what I'm talking about).

One of my favourite prompts for the [community profile] snowflake_challenge is always setting fandom (and fandom-adjacent) goals for the year ahead: it feels like a really nice way to set out what I'd like my year to consist of. Since fandom has positive connotations for me, it's essentially a list of "some cool things I want to do in 202X!"

(They're also the only new year's resolutions I bother to set, these days xD)

Since last year I've also taken to reviewing my goals for the previous year before I set new ones, just to see how I did. It doesn't matter if I missed any (I never make all of them) - often thinking about how my year was different to what I anticipated is just as interesting.

In 2024 I was really ambitious and set eight(!) goals, so I'm going to split this into two parts, otherwise it would be like... 3,000 words long xD You can check out my goals for 2024 here if you're curious.

1) Make a fanvid (not for a challenge/event)

So, things are looking a bit dire over at Tumblr dot com. (Again). I planned to post something about this during the last Demise of Tumblr episode, back when they announced that Tumblr's dedicated staff was being downsized to a skeleton crew, but I didn't get around to it.

This time, I want to throw some thoughts out there, but I don't want to write a properly fleshed-out essay, so for the details on what sparked this off, check Tumblr itself and look for summaries/round-ups (there are several). From here on in I'll assume you either have context or are content with knowing that "shit's going down" without further detail xD

Hi, Dreamwidth! Like a lot of people in the wake of the Great Tumblr NSFW Content Purge, I've decided to give this journalling thing a go.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about fandom communities since the first dregs of Tumblr's purge began back in November, and have been reading a lot of discussions about them, along with most of the rest of fandom. I find the conversations that are happening right now - about fandom migration, fandom platform(s) of the future, decentralised fandom, and how we can own the servers on social media to prevent this happening (yet) again - absolutely fascinating. (I've also been documenting them on Fanlore, which is my obligatory plug/invitation for you to join me if you're interested in that kind of thing. It's a lot of fun :D)

They've also made me think a lot about my own perspective on all of this, my fannish history, and my participation in fandom. Here's where I'm at right now.
