This is a short piece of it which my spiritual guru quoted in a talk I watched recently.

Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798 by William Wordsworth

...And I have felt
A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man:
A motion and a spirit, that impels
All thinking things, all objects of all thought,
And rolls through all things.

I did not post music on Monday or a word on Wednesday so I am making up for it today.

The words is...epistrophy.

Also known as epistrophe or occasionally antistrophe is a figure of speech in which a word or expression is repeated at the end of successive phrases, clauses, or sentences, often for rhetorical or poetic effect (such as Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: "…government of the people, by the people, for the people").

And I found it because I look up 'this day in jazz' before I visit jazz man every morning and yesterday the entry was: Trumpeter/bandleader Cootie Williams is the first to record a Thelonious Monk composition, Epistrophy, 1942.

Here's Monk doing it in Paris in 1969.

The 1979 alt-history novel Malafrena, set in Le Guin's fictional Central European country Orsinia in the years leading up to a revolution, was only available from my library as part of The Complete Orsinia. This 2016 omnibus edition includes a new introduction from the author, as well as all eleven stories comprising Orsinian Tales and two other stories which were anthologized in her 1996 collection Unlocking the Air, and three short poems, two of which were previously unpublished. So if you love Orsinia, this edition seems to be the definitive way to experience it!

Unfortunately I don't love Orsinia, and I didn't love Malafrena either, though I didn't dislike it as much as I disliked Orsinian Tales.

The novel centers on Itale Sorde, a young political activist from the provinces who moves to the capital city and starts a newsletter that is critical of Austrian rule and promotes the restoration of an independent Orsinian monarchy. The narrative is somewhat sprawling, also keeping up with some of the people Itale left behind at home, as well as following various of his friends and associates even when their paths diverge from his.

The things I liked about it were the vivid descriptions of physical setting and what it is like for the characters to be present as events are unfolding. I've never been in a violent political insurrection, and I do not think Le Guin ever was either, but I felt very convinced by the living, breathing details of how she wrote the one towards the end of this book. The confusion, the waiting, the hiding, the crowding and shoving and knocking down, the uncertainty about who is where, who's in charge, and if anyone is winning—it feels real. (The realistic, non-idealized depiction of a battle was also one of the things that stuck with me from Planet of Exile.)

The things I didn't like were many of the same things I didn't like about Orsinian Tales. [cut for length and negativity] )

February was quite busy all things considered.

I did start The Beauty which I really liked and wanna continue, though it sucks I’ve not had the time or focus to get back to it in March. Same with Pokémon Conceige, I really liked the first ep but for some reason haven’t gone back to it. Note to self, watch more of both.

There was also finishing the current [redacted] episodes and I really love the series so far. I’ve said it before but if you like shows like The X-Files or Fringe, you're gonna like this.

Also yay for finishing things, both Pokémon ZA and Halloween Party. Plus starting and reading Hawkins Horrors. I had hoped to finish it last month but alas no.

Cinema wise it added two films that will be my favs of the year, Cold Storage and Kangaroo. Completely different vibes but I love them so many. I need to get Cold Storage when it’s out.

Match had much less and I blame both the drilling and sickness meaning I didn’t have the focus for as much as I hoped. I had hoped to watch more Heated Rivalry, but every time I planned to something came up.p or my eyes got too achy to watch something. I’ll add it to The Beauty and Pokémon Concierge as something to watch more this month.

Watching things was mostly High Potential, which is always awesome and I did start The Amazing Digital Circus. Mostly that was cause Seapeekay shown an ep during the subathon he did and I was curious to see how it started. (I can definitely see the hype!) Plus I finally watched Clown In A Cornfield’s blu ray and a new who boxset came. Plus a rarity! The dvd section actually had something! It was planned to watch the Margaret Rutherford Marple boxset but we only watched one.

Another film added to my top ones of the year got added too, with Project Hail Mary. I’m still thinking about that last scene, it makes me so happy. I hope they put preorders up soon for the blu ray. I’m so tempted to see it again but it’s so long and I’ve got other things to see. (That makes it third film I’ve wanted to see twice since getting the pass but I didn’t see those either)

**

Tonight is very much a coin flip and depends how I’m feeling after lunch.

I’m either gonna do a cinema trip, which would be for They Will Kill You and Ready Or Not 2, or I’m gonna stay home and bundled and watch The Mortuary Assistant tonight (it got added to shudder last week). Either way I’ll do a post with thoughts.

The thing with the cinema trip is it’s the last time I can see both together, but it’s 6 and 8:15 respectively. They are showing next week some days, but both are at after 8 and one showing and I’m not too keen on doing two late night showings (especially since I wanna see Exit 8 which is a late night one, and cause of a theatre trip next week).

This month is gonna be a big cinema trip month from the look of it. Super Mario Galaxy (maybe with Arco), Exit 8, Undertone (hopefully together), The Mummy (on Record store day, possibly with something else), Hokum.

There were new trailers the other day too, for Masters Of The Universe and Backrooms and I’m hyped for both.

I saw the latest check-in post in goals_on_dw and thought I might as well make this!
  • I've been keeping up with my job-related goals quite well, for the most part. I'm a bit behind on some work stuff because the online platform I have to use still doesn't work properly, but I'm documenting everything on paper just in case. The goal for April will be to keep up at day and find a work-around for the damn program lol.
  • More of the same for my study goals. If I keep up my rhythm, by the end of the month I'll have gone through ~one third of the material I want to finish by the end of June, and I'll have also completed my B1 French course.
  • I need to step up my workout LOL. At the moment I'm spending most of my time in a small town, where there are little to no actually-fun-physical-activities as opposed to gym rat stuff (and even if I liked gyms, the one there is really poorly equipped). I kind of hate staying-in-place workouts as anything but warm ups/stretching, unless it's something like a dance or self-defense class (which I haven't been able to take in forever), and basically the only thing available there for me is... running. So running it'll be!
  • As for writing goals, this month I want to write something for the Femslash Big Bang April prompt, as well as a one-shot for February's or March's, to post it later during rollover week. That, and a fic I've been meaning to finish about Mia Dearden and Jason Todd.
  • I will also continue crossposting older fics into dreamwidth. For April, I'll finish with the three sentence ficathon prompts from 2025, as well as a few other drabble prompts I wrote for an ask game that year.
  • I am getting really back into fiction reading and I'm going to enjoy all this energy while it lasts! I'm going to go through my #to read lists in tumblr to knock down some short stories and fanfics, maybe some comics, that have been on my list forever, for one. Other novels I want to read this month are yet another Catherine Ryan Howard thriller, an indie fantasy book written by a discord mutual, and a reread of Frankenstein in this page that compares the 1818 and 1831 editions. I'm also pacing myself with some series (roughly one chapter per day): Earthsea, The Shadowhunter Chronicles (in a bout of nostalgia for the show while refusing to watch the show LOL), and His Dark Materials, which I've been meaning to reread for years. I don't rule out other stuff getting added to the list, I'm going to follow my whims.
  • Let's see if I can also finish Twin Peaks this month! Season 2, at least. The other shows I'll be (re)watching will be in French. Two birds, one stone, and all that. And I'll try to watch one film per week, as well.
  • During my trips to cities I will be visiting at least two (2) museums/art galleries/etc., minimum. I have one visit already planned for next week.

Have you ever seen the series, Equalizer from many years ago? Then have you seen the three movies with Denzel Washington called The Equalizer? And lastly, did you like the new television series with Queen Latifa? Who do you think was the best at it?

That would be Denzel Washington in my opinion. I wasn’t that big on the old series. Robert McCall was great but he was no Denzel. And I hated the newer series with Queen Latifa in it. I tried to like it but I just couldn’t.

Thought I’d give you the update for my brother Chris. They found 3 spots, rather large in his brain. He will get radiation for that. The doc thinks about three months worth of radiation should do the trick. His treatment for his lung cancer will be draining the fluid every week. They’ll put a port in so they don’t have to restock for the draining. For the chemo they will give one huge shot once a week for 12 weeks and they’ll start him on the pills. He starts all of the treatment on Tuesday. It’s very strong chemo and the pills are strong too. So he’s getting a double whammy with the medication. In the last week he had to go to hospital twice to have it drained. Plus now they’ll need to check his lymph nodes. There were three that were affected. So anyhow they going in very aggressively hoping that his body will cooperate. He told Chris to not be alarmed with weight loss. It’s going to take time to get better. The doc said looks like chemo for 12-16 weeks. They’re putting a port in for the chemo therapy. Then after the therapy they’ll take new tests to see how the cancer is doing. They won’t have any big news until after 12 weeks. Unless he gets worse. It all depends on his body and how it takes to the treatment. That’s all for now. He could use good thoughts or prayers starting Tuesday. Thank you.

Last year, as an interstitial segment on Game Changer, the folks over at Dropout.tv filmed an improv skit called Dimension 20: On a Bus, where the concept was four professional GMs sitting down to play D&D with a GM who had a limited understanding of how the game was played.

It was a funny bit, but I don't think anyone expected the calls for more to actually result in anything. Until now, when for April Fool's Day, Dropout released a full one-hour episode of it. It's only up on their streaming service, but here's the teaser trailer that dropped without warning:

And man, the actual episode did not disappoint. It was a hilarious mess that hit just the right balance of winding up a bunch of professional storytellers, but also letting them do what they best as they tried to salvage things. I laughed to the point of tears, but I also legitimately picked up pointers about character-building and how to move a plot along (to get to LAX to fly out to an M&M wedding in Lisbon when everything keeps blowing up).

So I called Boston Scientific about my strips and the lady stops me and says 'let me guess they told you to remove it if it says 'poor skin contact.' Yes. 'Unless it's falling off leave it on. It's fine. It's transmitting.' 'It woke me up at night with this.' 'put it on do not disturb and get your rest, honey.'

I want to believe her. She admitted it's not in their booklet either. They're sending more since I do have only one left for a month.

I skipped yoga. I wanted to get some stuff done at home. Too many days a week I'm getting home barely in time to do dinner and shower before I have like 3 hours before bed and I'm exhausted. Glad I did because my sugar crashed out.

And minor miracle happened in holy week. I called the clinic and said I'm sorry I forgot I don't work friday and do you have anything in Jackson (closer to where I live) instead of Gallipolis (closer to where I work). And they DID!!! Yay. So I can go to Jackson do that AND do some of the Easter festival fun stuff I wanted to do.

Books!!!! It's time for the March wrap up. You know the drill, if anything strikes your fancy let's talk. And OMG the new bookstore is doing a book trade in 2 weeks (after I gave away a bunch of books at work, but that's fine too. I'm glad my friends wanted them).

What I Just Finished Reading:

Violet Thistlewaite is not a villain any more This was a sweet cozy fantasy/romantasy

Zombie Day Care - don't bother

What I am Currently Reading:

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek - I really wanted to read this BUT so far within 50ish pages there's been forced marriage, domestic violence, martial rape, attempted sexual assault (by brother in law), racism, animal abuse. And it's bleak AF. Not sure I'll finish this book club book.

Edinburgh Twilight - historic mystery, chonkier than I like mysteries to be but I'm enjoying it

The Tale of the Hidden Village - some cozy fantasy/mystery indie I got a couple years back already.

What I Plan to Read Next: The Death Card (an arc I just got in the mail)
