I've decided to suspend doing the Snowflake challenges in order so that I can jump on something a bit more timely!

Snowflake Challenge #13 is "Make a rec list of fanworks!" I've been in a bit of a Peter Pan frame of mind lately, what with travelling to Dublin to watch a theatre performance of Peter Pan (okay, I was visiting a friend, but we did very much make the plans around going to see that show xD) (I should do a DW post about it) and then the other day I pulled out an old notebook to use for something and unexpectedly found a Peter Pan fic I'd been writing inside xD

Originally I thought of doing this rec list for one of my more recent fandoms, but then the idea of a Pan-fics roundup took hold (also because I enjoy using the term Pan-fics :D). It's quite a small collection, but it's fun to bring together works from through the years with different takes on the canon and characters. I hope you all enjoy the result!

My favourite Peter Pan fics: a short list

1) Edge of Freedom by ShawThang: Wendy begins to grow up and receive the attentions of potential suitors, but her heart only wants to fly.

This is such a favourite fic to revisit, and I've read it so many times. It's a wonderful follow-up to the 2003 film (which is my favourite version!): a slightly older Wendy is now out in society and attending parties and gatherings, being introduced to potential suitors, and struggling to reconcile this with her desire to be her more carefree self.

It features a very likeable OC for Wendy to relate to, William, though he's no competition for Peter, who is the one to whom Wendy's heart really belongs. Peter/Wendy, of course!

2) Zeal by Lunamaria: Her childhood was in serious danger.

Zeal is a really interesting take on Peter Pan in that it's essentially a modern (or maybe no powers?) AU: Wendy and Peter are two young people who meet and fall in love, and as far as we know, Peter Pan in this 'verse is just a normal, if captivating, boy. Neverland is a metaphor for young love rather than a place, and Peter can't fly, but the core dynamic between Peter and Wendy is still there, and it translates wonderfully.

3) Winter Dust by Gray-Rain Skies: AU. To dream is what it's all about. [PeterWendy]

This is another one I've read and reread - beginning to read it immediately prompts the fond realisation of "Oh, it's this fic <3" In this AU, Wendy is already 15 and in the process of growing up when she meets Peter - who, like in the previous fic rec, is a "normal" boy, but still captivating and mischievous, tempting Wendy to stay in a land of carefree fantasy rather than become responsible and grown-up. But he also shies away when Wendy develops romantic feelings for him. It's got some great callbacks to the 2003 film, and is all in all a really well-crafted real-world AU.

4) Don't Suffer So, Peter Pan by catiepie182002: Wendy learns of Peter's nightmares and a secret he can hide from everyone... except the girl who knows him better than he'd like to admit. As fluffy as I get.

This is firmly a book-verse fanfic, and it's in fact canon in the book that Peter suffers from nightmares that Wendy would often comfort him through during the night. This ticks all of my hurt/comfort boxes, from injury H/C to nightmare comforting (one of my favourite tropes), all while Peter does his best to maintain an outwardly tough facade and Wendy holds things together. The narration is delightful and so like the book, as is the characterisation of Peter, Wendy, and the Lost Boys. It all makes for a wonderful, rereadable whole.

5) Dark and Sinister Men by Nimori - An old friend drops in on Hook.

In a total departure from the previous fics on this list - this is a Captain Hook/Jack Sparrow fic, and it's excellent. James Hook and Jack Sparrow were schoolmates at Pirate School (yes, really :D) and were more enemies than friends (okay, enemies with benefits), with Sparrow constantly outdoing Hook at every turn. In fact, I have to quote from the fic here:

"He was always better than I at sashaying," Hook said mournfully. "Top marks in swashbuckling. Could drink a barrel of rum and still find the booty he buried last term."

Things get heated during dinner and the two men fall into bed together, but Jack isn't one to stick around in the morning. It's amazing how this fic combines humour and sincerity, crackiness and genuine sweetness, with a small cameo from Peter at the end and a funny and touching moment between him and Hook. If you've never considered reading a Peter Pan fanfic, make an exception for this - I promise it's worth it :D

6) Peter Pan + Inception | Trailer Mash-up by Weird Girl Vintage

Okay, so I said Pan-fics, but I can't resist adding one Pan-vid, which is a hilarious mashup trailer by Weird Girl Vintage. Around 2011 or so I suddenly fell down a mashup trailer rabbit hole on YouTube, exploring brilliant vids that take the visuals from one canon and the audio from another (a trailer) to create something totally new. Inception is one of the most popular sources for trailer material because it's got great, dramatic music, is memorable, and can be transformed to fit all kinds of concepts.

I hardly need to start watching this before I'm cackling in anticipation - this is a funny but also genuinely well-executed setting of visuals from Disney's Peter Pan to Inception's trailer, and the surrealness of Neverland really fits with Inception's dreamscapes and mind heists. Also, some of the "casting" (which voices are given to which characters) will make you laugh.

And there's my rec list! Does anyone have any Peter Pan fic recs of their own? Please offer them in the comments! (Book and 2003 movieverse preferred, but feel free to make a case for others ;3)

That trailer mash up was hilarious! The dreamscape idea works so well!

I don't think I have any recs, but a few years ago went on a chronological read through of all the versions of the original story, and it was a bit of a trip!
