Last year when I did the Snowflake Challenge I had the most fun setting fannish goals for the coming year, because I feel like it's a nice spin on New Year's Resolutions. Not an "I must do this every day" type thing, but more like "Here's some things I'd like to tick off/add more of into my (fandom) life", and that feels like a more positive framing.

I've been thinking about my 2023 goals a lot over the past year, and I know I definitely ticked off a few. But looking back at the list now, there are definitely some I just forgot about 😆 I could have been more systematic about completing them, but I had some other new things I focused on last year instead, so some of those took precedence.

Anyway, Day 2 of the 2024 Snowflake Challenge is setting goals for 2024 - they don't have to be fannish, and this year I think I'll set some non-fannish goals too, but they'll all be creative in some way. First, though, I want to look back at my goals from last year and how I did:

1) Take part in 2 new challenges/fests

I did this and then some, although not with any of the challenges I thought I was doing at the start of the year 😅 (I still haven't done my SK8 Heart Bingo...) In March I took part in 3/3 for Three, a Murderbot Diaries fanworks event that I'm counting as a fest, and wrote a small 407 word fic that I was very pleased with. Then in April I wrote a fic for Aspec TMBD, an aspec prompt meme for The Murderbot Diaries (and I also submitted some prompts!). I had meant to write more works and had another one in progress that I abandoned because it was going to take too long, but I was really pleased with the fic I did write.

I also just took part in Fence Secret Santa 2023 for the FENCE comic fandom! This was part of my over-enthusiastically signing up for Too Many Challenges over exchange season, as I also did Yuletide and am still taking part in Festivids, which I'm going to count as 2023 even though the vid will be posted in 2024.

Finally, because fanwork creation challenges aren't the only ones that count, I did Comment Bingo twice!

So yeah, I nailed this one. However, doing three challenges in a row for exchange season has been really hard work, so I think I'm going to dial it back for this year. I like challenges because the deadline motivates me to finish creating something, and also because I enjoy the community element of everyone sharing their fanworks and appreciating each other's creations. But sometimes working to meet those deadlines in time to make sure I don't let down my recipient is tiring, and it's harder to make the decision to just drop something if I've made a commitment. But 2023 has introduced me to some challenges I definitely want to keep taking part in, like Comment Bingo (which is self-motivated), and Festivids.

2) Make a fanvid

I'm going to give myself partial credit for this one, because I'm working on a fanvid for Festivids, although it's not quite finished yet. I did want to make some fanvids not for an event or challenge, but just for me, and I haven't embarked on any yet, but I did have some great new ideas for D&D: Honor Among Thieves and Across the Spider-Verse respectively, on top of the list I already had xD

In December I also got a dedicated fanvidding PC (my significant other upgraded his PC and gave me his old one), so I'm hoping this will lead to more vidding beyond Festivids!

Behold a new fanvidding PC!

3) Finish and publish deep fic writer asks

I did do this! Part 1 is here and Part 2 is over here. I had fun answering these and setting them as a fannish goal for 2023 did motivate me to finish them when I had some downtime!

What was interesting was how much my answers and perspective changed between Part 1 (posted in March) and Part 2 (posted in June), mostly based on the fandoms I'd got into in the meantime, as well as a personal archive I'd started making that changed my perspective on archiving my oldest works, so I wound up adding a correction of sorts to some of the early answers.

4) Finish and publish ONE (1) multichapter fanfic (of more than 2 chapters)

4b) AND/OR: Finish a WIP that's at least a year old

Yeah... this was one of the ones I forgot about (though I definitely was thinking about it in the first half of the year). My track record of multichapter fic non-completion remains unblemished xD And I have not finished any older WIPs since I set those goals, either. Maybe this year...

5) Archive some more of my old fics on AO3

I thought very hard about doing this one and even had some specific works in mind, and one thing I did do is make a spreadsheet of all my published fanworks going right back to my earliest fics, just for fun and personal documentation. I've also started making a personal fanworks archive, so my archiving focus has switched to that rather than AO3.

I've set up a bunch of pages on the site and archived a couple of works, but I still have a lot more that I want to do in terms of actual archiving, so that will definitely be a goal for 2024!

BONUS: Try out a new fanwork medium (e.g. icons, podfic)

Alas, I didn't get to this one either. The second half of 2023 was more dominated by original fic writing in the end rather than fanworks, and I think that's fine! You can't always predict what new projects are going to come up.

So, now that I've looked back over my goals for 2023, I'm going to set some for 2024! But since this post is already quite long, I've decided to make this Part 1, and the new goals will go in Part 2 ^^

Part 2 is now up!
