Hey, everyone! Happy new year!

I haven't found time to blog in a while because the end of last year and exchange season specifically were pretty manic (I said the same thing last time and resolved to dial back my exchange participation for 2024-5 and then I... did not do that) and I only finished up my remaining fanwork, my Festivid, a couple of weeks ago.

(Still waiting sort-of-patiently for reveals...!)

But I have posts in the works for the Snowflake Challenge that I'm determined to put up at least some of before January is out, and I also wanted to make a short post about a fun trip that I recently took down memory lane.

A few days ago I was reading some of the recent Snowflake Challenge posts on Mastodon and got to reminiscing about early fannish interactions with Yu-Gi-Oh! with Mochibumbum/xx_HoneyRoses_xx over on blorbo.social. (The theme was Snowflake Challenge #10: Fandom Firsts). Mochibumbum recalled how Kids WB/4Kids used to air a segment alongside Yu-Gi-Oh! where they would display fanart that people had sent in from around the world. In turn I reminisced about my aunt recording episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! for me and my brother on VHS and sending them to us in the post (because she had Sky and we didn't at the time) and then us later watching it on a children's breakfast TV show called 'Up On the Roof'.

A fun thing that Up On the Roof used to do was preface each episode with a summary of what had previously happened in the series - acted out by members of the Up On the Roof crew complete with goofy props and costumes xD (I remember the costume for Thousand Eyes Restrict in Yugi's Duelist Kingdom showdown with Pegasus being REALLY funny). I lamented that I didn't have recordings of any of those segments (since we could watch them as they were aired and so we didn't need to tape them).

Mochibumbum wrote, "I wish a lot of these special segments weren't lost media, I would've loved to have seen the host explain Yu-Gi-Oh while in costume🤣" And then I was like, well... I haven't actually LOOKED on YouTube to see if there are any recordings... maybe I should do that!

And wouldn't you know a brilliant account called 'Classic TV from 2004-2008' uploaded a bunch of recordings of Up On the Roof! 'Classic TV''s recordings all date from August onwards, but another user, Nay Smith, sort of randomly uploaded a single episode from 1st February 2004 which is just before my brother and I started watching, since I think we tuned in right around Yugi's showdown with Pegasus, and this recording has the duel between Joey and Yugi to see who would advance to the Duelist Kingdom finals:

(This embed should hopefully start at 22:04 which is where the hilarious acted-out summary begins)

My favourite thing about this is "Peg"-a-sus who is a peg with a pair of googly eyes stuck on 😂 Also, the little pre- and post-ad animation with the show's theme tune brought on such a wave of nostalgia for me!

I don't take for granted that these sorts of things will be preserved especially when it's non-US media (even though I know the UK still enjoys a shitton of privilege and attention in that regard) so I was really delighted to find that some dedicated peeps had saved and uploaded broadcasts of this random mid-00s children's breakfast TV show.

What is some 'lost media' that you really wish you could find - or that you thought was lost but you found it preserved somewhere?

Oh gosh everyone seems to be more and more busy and struggling these days don't they!

Thanks, I wrote a post about my year, I think it's called My 2024 or something. The last few years have just been sooo difficult and I feel like I've been fighting off problems endlessly. I really need a calm 2025 and a rest 🙏
