A relationships update to SquidgeWorld!

It's been a while since I checked in on SquidgeWorld (not since I last posted a work there at the end of July), so I was really pleased to find that they've implemented some new things since I was last there, including nonbinary relationship categories! That's an additional three relationship categories (alongside the existing F/F, F/M, M/M, Multi, QPR, Gen, Vs./Antagonistic, and Other): F/NB, M/NB, and NB/NB.

They don't have icons designed yet, so I'm looking forward to when that's implemented because I like having a full icon set (or as full as is applicable) on my works. (Plus, right now it looks like the works where I've tagged only a NB relationship category aren't tagged with any relationships 😅)

I didn't have as many works to re-tag as I'd expected, partly due to not having archived my full set of works over at SquidgeWorld, but also because a lot of the nonbinary characters I've written about in fic have not been in romantic relationships in those works. However, I archived an additional Starship Iris work for a threesome ship (really, it's more of a pre-threesome, but I'm counting it) that I'm fond of, but that I haven't written into any further works, and it's made me think about revisiting that ship, something I haven't considered in a while.

I also learned that SqWA had an influx of a couple of thousand new users in mid-September, which is exciting! I hope they stick around. Right now my M.O. for cross-posting anything to SquidgeWorld is a bit haphazard; it's somewhere I put up works that I haven't published to AO3 for whatever reason, plus some small fandoms stuff, and I also like to post things there that I can categorise in ways I can't on AO3, like the NB relationships and QPRs. Still, I'd like to add other works there, but I can't decide on a rationale (and I don't want to cross-post absolutely everything). Decisions decisions.

Speaking of archiving, I got some good stuff done on my personal fanworks archive during Small Web September, but I really need to get back on the horse and archive more works there, especially since I now have my fanwork page CSS sorted to my liking.

I must admit I don’t really understand QPR but I do understand VS. I often write about people arguing and being adversaries, so that is useful.

And I'm glad there’s an incest warning now, I am not good at picking up hints, I need clear information. I write MotoGP RPF and there are a many sets of brothers among those guys, I’d rather not read about them having sex with each other🤣

I agree, I definitely like SW differentiating itself from AO3. Otherwise, what’s the point of two identical archives?

Hopefully SW will take off soon, the sudden influx of new users in September is promising. I noticed this on Mastodon—every time Twitter had a controversy, lots of new users would come to Mastodon in a tidal wave. It caused the site some problems but we managed to cope. The main thing that worries me about AO3 is if it gets attacked and taken down by extremists like that time it apparently happened. SW is more low profile and less of a target, I hope.

I probably wouldn’t bother with the MotoGP RPF ones though as a) the fandom isn’t on there, and b) they tend to be fics written about specific events e.g. certain races, and they get dated very quickly. They tend to be time-linked, people forget past events and obviously riders constantly retire and get forgotten. I hope that make sense?

Oh - for that I assume you can look at the type of relationship tag, since any relationships that are romantic or sexual would be indicated with /. If it's &, then they're not tagging correctly!

It does! That sounds like a very interesting fandom dynamic. I can see why the fandom is mostly on Tumblr, since it's suited to that kind of in-the-moment fandom interaction. I particularly like fanworks that are created out of a very specific moment in a fandom, because it's really fun to capture what people were talking and obsessing about at that point in time (like between two seasons of a TV show). But they require a lot of context for anyone coming to them later on 😆

Yes at first I thought...that / can't mean the brothers having sex with each other...can it? But it did, so if they put 'incest' in the tags, that would help.

Having said that, most of the riders are Spanish and Italian, so it genuinely seems normal for brothers to kiss each other on the mouth in those countries, because it happens enough to be noticeable. 🙄😅

It is interesting- as I started writing mostly in MotoGP RPF it seems normal to me but now I've branched out, I realise that many other fandoms aren't as extreme and immediate. ANYTHING goes in MotoGP RPF, and apparently the riders know about it and don't care. They risk their lives every day on fast bikes, they are almost permanently injured, so I don't think they are worried about people writing stories about them. lol.

There are also notorious arguments in MotoGP, and unfortunately one that happened between two riders almost 10 years ago has re-emerged, and so most of the fics are about them now. I'm bored to death of that argument so I've been getting less involved in that fandom, it's sooo boooring reading endless fics about the same couple. I like variety.
