Okay, so I'm trailing a bit behind with Snowflake Challenge posts, but that's okay because there's no deadline! I will still try to do them* in "order", though I know that doesn't really matter either; that's just my organisational preference ^^
(*them = the challenges I am doing, because there are some I've decided to skip)
Snowflake Challenge #4 is: "IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself. [...] Think of it as an elevator pitch, or a manifesto; give us bullet points or lyrical prose. Want to make a game out of it? Tell us things that are true and things that aren’t and let us guess. Don't know what to say? Hate elevator speeches, but don't want to skip a day? Try this Random Question Generator and make yourself a meme all your own."
I really liked the idea of a Random Question Generator, as I like answering varied questions about myself but thinking up questions is hard when you have a completely blank slate. So, here are my answers to five questions that the question generator threw out:
1) If you had to choose, would you rather be too hot or too cold?
Oooh, I've often thought about this one. I always veer towards "too cold" because there are theoretically always more layers that you can pile on, but there's an upper limit to the things that you can do to cool yourself down.
This is me assuming that the temperature state can be cured, though, or is it just a perma-state that you have to deal with no matter what? In which case, both are unpleasant in different ways. I think I would still deal better with a state of slight cold, but shivering and having cold hands/feet is never fun. Being too hot at least tends to come with nice causes (sunshine). Unless you're running a temperature!
2) What is your favorite spice?
This is probably where I reveal my very boring cooking tendencies, but I do love food seasonings, I'm just not good with actual hot spice. Probably paprika, which is so versatile and generally delicious. If ginger qualifies, I love to add powdered or fresh ginger to things, usually mixed with citrus-y flavours like lime or lemon, and then soy sauce and dumpling vinegar. Those are the basic ingredients of my staple stir-fry sauce, in fact xD
3) If you had to walk away from one technology in your life, what would it be?
Mmmm... good question. Am I picking the easiest technology to walk away from, or the one I most wish I could give up? I honestly wish I could 'walk away' from my smartphone and make do with a basic non-smart mobile, my laptop/PC and an MP3 player. I know it can be done, I just think it would be a lot of work to both do and justify to my family and friends. Most of all I would miss WhatsApp, which is my main communication app, but I'd also miss having a pocket camera that takes good-quality images. I love my new Lumix compact camera (my partner got me a newer model for Christmas!) but it's too bulky to carry around day-to-day.
Saying that, my smartphone is not really that portable when all's said and done - I had a really close call a few days ago when it popped out of my pocket as I was climbing out of a taxi and landed perilously close to a drain 😱
4) What uncommon thing would you encourage everyone to try once?
Marmite! You might find that you like it :D
(Okay, it's not "uncommon" if you live in the UK, but still, I am pro-Marmite trying)
5) What do you wish you had learned five years before you did?
Hmmm... I'm not sure if five years is the right time interval, but I wish I'd known while I was at undergrad that academic scores would mean less over the grand scheme of things than I believed, so that I could make the most of more extra-curriculars and experiences that I only had available at that time. Still, I basically went to the University of Academic Pressure (well, one of them), so my environment didn't really support reaching that conclusion >.>
Fandom-wise (I haven't really talked about fandom yet in this post, I think that's a record!) I also wish I'd mastered the art of the "just write a short fic for this idea" years earlier than I did (and to be honest, I'm not sure if I've "mastered it" now, but I'm much better!) so that I could have enjoyed completing more fics and not getting hung up on abandoned WIPs/longfics or unrealised ideas. But you live and you learn, and I'm still learning!
