Snowflake Challenge #14 - Fandom Wrap
Jan. 30th, 2023 02:44 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I'm completely thrown by it almost being the end of January (how is it February this week???) and also that we're coming to the end of the Snowflake Challenge, which I've dearly loved taking part in this year. I have multiple posts to my DW that are not Dear Yuletide Author letters! I've commented on posts! Subscribed to journals! And had lovely comments from other people on my posts, which is so nice. I'm hoping to squeeze in one or two more Challenges before January is out, but first I wanted to do Challenge #14, which is the Fandom Wrap(ped?) Challenge.
I love year-end wraps (though as the challenge post says, they are EVERYWHERE now which is a bit tiring), so this is a super fun idea. I'm going to use the prompts from the post but as a Top 3 instead of Top 5, because I don't think I would have enough for 5. I didn't do as much fanstuff as I would have liked in 2022 (there were a lot of other things going on. I got married!) but it's nice to look back on a few highlights.
What were your top 3 fandoms for 2022 based on the amount of time you interacted with them?
1. Encanto
2. SK8 the Infinity
3. Sandman TV series
It's hard to decide which got more attention between my relatively brief but extremely intense dive into the Sandman TV series (*cough* Dreamling *cough*) and my longer-lasting but slightly less intensive fall into SK8 fandom, so this may be a tie between #2 and #3, though I thInk SK8 just edges it out there. Anyway, the crown definitely goes to Encanto, which I watched with a friend in January and subsequently found myself with a surprising amount of headcanons and feelings about, especially once I started to dive into Madrigal Triplets Content on Tumblr. I had a friend message me with a link to an Encanto TikTok video saying "Based on your Tumblr right now, I think you'll enjoy this" and I had to laugh because even though I hadn't said anything about it to them, they could tell I was in deep xD
I still have a bunch of fics and fic ideas I want to finish, so I don't feel like I'm done with the fandom by any measure, but I also want to see my SK8 stuff through as well (and I have several thousand words of a Dreamling canon divergence AU written, plus an idea for a GREAT D&D-based fic that came to me while I was ill). More time to create in 2023, plz, universe 🥺
What were your top 3 fandom spaces (Discord, Twitter, etc.) you experienced fandom in terms of time spent?
1. Mastodon (fandom.ink)
2. Tumblr
3. ...maaaybe Twitter?
There's no question that Mastodon and Tumblr are my top two, but this is another one that's super hard to quantify. I gave the top spot to Mastodon/fandom.ink because of the sheer amount of time spent there since things started blowing up in October, to the point where I was barely on Tumblr, plus there was that other activity bump in April (when Musk initially bought Twitter) that was a lot of fun. However, I do go on Tumblr basically every day, particularly in slow moments at work (eheh) and spent a lot of time there interacting with stuff for Encanto (as mentioned!) and Sandman, so I may be undervaluing Tumblr. Let's call it a tie here.
#3 was always going to be a distant 3rd and it's a toss-up between Twitter and Discord, both of which are not very big platforms for me. I'm on Discord more now thanks to the MatchaBlossom Flash Reverse Bang, which has a really nice server (everyone there seems very chill, which is a contrast to the hyper-intensity of the Podcast Big Bang server I joined in 2021 😅), but that's been much more of a 2023 thing. Twitter I have barely ever used for fandom, but it is a good space for anime stuff and thus there's a lot of good SK8 content on there, so I dusted off my fandom Twitter when I got into SK8 fandom and I'm following some new accounts. Pretty sad I'm only getting into Fandom Twitter when the place is falling apart, but c'est la vie...
What are the top 3 things you did to contribute to fandom in terms of time? Did you write? Comment? Send positive energy into the universe? Create art?
1. Write
2. Comment/reblog
3. Draw
Not a very varied list this year, so I hope to do a bit more in 2023. As ever writing is my main mode of fannish activity, plus I read a lot of fic and try to comment as much as I can, and I did a lot of reblogging of both fic and fanart (and some gifsets and comics) with awestruck tags. Drawing goes on the list for the first time as I actually made two fancomics for The Strange Case of Starship Iris - I have a lot of little comic ideas in my head, but I don't have a lot of faith in my ability to do them justice on paper, so last year was the first time I gave it a go. Starship Iris was a nice fandom to try it in because I've seen art of all kinds and skill levels get appreciation, so that gave me enough confidence to put some of my own out there.
What were your top 3 most appreciated fandom contributions? (i.e. in terms of likes, kudos, reblogs, comments, etc.)
1. A Glow in the Doorway (Encanto, one-shot fanfic)
2. My Real Gift is 'Acting' (Encanto, multichapter fanfic, WIP)
3. Getaway (The Strange Case of Starship Iris, fancomic)
A Glow the Doorway was by far my most-appreciated fic this year, and the reaction on AO3 particularly blew me away a bit when I posted it a few days after watching the film (I've also had some nice feedback on FF.net!), which definitely spurred me on to create more for the fandom. My Real Gift is 'Acting', my second Encanto fic, was a lot quieter comments-wise (shout-out to Aurum for being my most faithful commenter, I appreciate you so much <333) but got a lot of kudos, so at least I knew people were reading! Finally, my first Starship Iris fancomic (unnamed when I posted it, but I've given it a title in anticipation of cross-posting to AO3) got some nice notes and reblogs on Tumblr, which was lovely.
I also wanted to link to my Tumblr Year in Review, which I enjoyed - I meant to rereun it in late December to see if it changed at all, but forgot 😅 https://www.tumblr.com/iffeelscouldkill/703088191921651712/i-posted-1164-times-in-2022 Dreamling was my most-used tag, followed by Encanto at #2, but it was close! I also had some Stray-related posts in my top 5, which is fun - I didn't spend long enough in the fandom to count it as one of my fandoms for 2022, but I loved the art and meta, and had some ideas for fanart of my own - maybe I'll revisit them when I finally finish the game (should have made that a goal for 2023...)
