I was really pleased to see this come up again in this year's Snowflake Challenge, because I meant to do this challenge when it came up last year (I think it was Challenge #2?) and never got around to it; when I didn't see it in the beginning of this year's challenge, I assumed it wasn't in the rotation. But here it is! \o/ So, I wasn't going to let my second chance pass me by (even after DW ate my first partial draft of this post 😢).
I've also done a few other days of the Snowflake Challenge so far, not all of which are on DW, so here are some links:
#1: Update your fandom information
#6: Post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt
#10: Create a fanwork (MastoDrabbleeeeeeee)
The challenge is: "In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private." I definitely wanted these to be fannish goals, which for me is what makes it fun, so here are my fannish goals for 2023:
1) Take part in 2 new challenges/fests
I'm already partway to completing this one because I'm taking part in the MatchaBlossom Reverse Flash Bang (I got my artist pairing a few days ago! *vibrates*), and I also have my eye on a couple of others, so two feels doable. I signed up to the Sk8 Heart Bingo Challenge a couple of weeks ago and got my personalised Bingo card (and then kind of forgot about it until just now, oops), but obviously it doesn't count unless I actually post something. The other one I have my eye on is Podcast Girls Week in July, so I have a bit longer to gear myself up for that one. Hopefully I'll manage all three!
2) Make a fanvid
This something I managed do from 2019 (when I made my First Fanvid) until 2021 with my yearly vid for The Ineffable Con vid show, but last year I gave it a miss. This wasn't a big deal, because after #3 I thought I would take a break from making vids on a deadline, but I have a long list of vid ideas for other fandoms (and some more for Good Omens, which for some reason inspires fanvids like nothing else), and I'd really like to make some headway on it. Right now I have a MatchaBlossom fanvid I'm dying to make (which would also be my first AMV!) and my significant other has even *ahem* acquired the footage for me, so I have no excuse xD
3) Finish and publish deep fic writer asks
This one is a bit weirdly specific, but I came across these deep fic writer asks on Tumblr and really wanted to answer them - but I doubt I would get anything if I asked my followers to put the questions to me, and I wanted to do them all! So, I thought, whyfore not just answer them myself - and post them to Dreamwidth?
Except, well xD There's a reason you're supposed to do them one at a time. Each one is a deep dive unto itself, and I'm a wordy person in general, so I've written several mini-essays xD I've been plugging away at them since October, and I've answered a little over half (I haven't worked on them particularly consistently). They're fun to answer, but also time-consuming xD Anyway, one of my Goals for 2023 is to finally finish and publish it, so... Watch this space!
4) Finish and publish ONE (1) multichapter fanfic (of more than 2 chapters)
My claim to not-fame is that in more than 17 years of publishing fanfiction, I have never actually completed a multichapter fanfic. Of more than two chapters. I have a two-shot I wrote for Spider-Man: Homecoming (and a Starship Iris fic that's technically a one-shot with an epilogue) but I've never managed to finish a true multichapter fic. I have started many of them! In particular, I have a Podcast Big Bang fic from 2021 where the final chapter is half-written, and a 5 Times Encanto fic from last year that's one chapter away from completion, both of which I feel are pretty doable. Or maybe I'll finally finish Adjusting, the Starship Iris 5+1 things fic I started back in 2019. (Sob, maybe). Or one of my other WIPs! I just really want to finally say I finished one.
4b) AND/OR: Finish a WIP that's at least a year old
If I'm really not feeling inspired to work on any of the multichapter WIPs, I will settle for finishing any one of the (many, many) unfinished fics I have sitting around on my phone and laptop, most of which are multiple years old at this point. I still hold out hope of finishing them all xD
5) Archive some more of my old fics on AO3
I haven't put a number on this one, but there are a lot of older fics I still haven't published to AO3, mostly from 2008 and earlier, and although I probably won't do them all, I'd like to add a couple more this year.
BONUS: Try out a new fanwork medium (e.g. icons, podfic)
For extra bonus points, I'd love to try out a new fanwork medium in 2023. Icons and podfics are two that I've particularly wanted to try, so if I suddenly find myself with some extra time or am just inspired, I want to give one or the other a go!

Date: 2023-01-26 08:28 am (UTC)I liked reading your list of goals and think they're very achievable while also being challenging for you.
I'm especially impressed by making a fanvid. I love watching them but wouldn't even have an idea where to start.
Good luck with them all!

Date: 2023-01-26 10:33 am (UTC)and last year I only did one challengeso I just didn't know what the norm was, but it makes sense to change things up from year to year. We do the same thing on Fanlore where we have regular challenges that take place annually, and we make sure the editing tasks are different year to year so that it doesn't get samey for our regular participants, but many of the same ones will make an appearance or be brought back after a year or two off.Thank you very much! ^^ I wasn't looking to push myself too hard with these goals, since otherwise I'll just get demotivated, but they should also involve some effort xD It was a fun exercise to ask myself 'What do you want to do this year?' instead of thinking about what I feel I ought to do, and it came out as a nice round 5 goals (with one bonus).
Hopefully this time next year I can look back on how I did!

Date: 2023-01-27 02:34 am (UTC)I feel you on the multi-chaptered works! Theres been so many times where I've written out the first chapter... just to leave it as a forever WIP. One-shots are easier in that regard, I guess. It's something I want to push myself to try and do too, so hopefully we'll both be able to do that this year!
It's always interesting to work with new mediums, I hope you have fun with trying new stuff out!

Date: 2023-01-30 11:11 pm (UTC)Exactly - I have so many unfinished fics from my years in fandom, both published and unpublished xD I'm in awe of the people who can serialise massive multichapter works on a schedule - even if I thought I could write that many words for one fanwork (I do tend towards plotty works but there's an upper limit to length), I could never sustain the updates regularly. I promised my Podcast Big Bang fic on a weekly schedule and that lasted for exactly two chapters (and only because they were already written xD)
Thank you again! I definitely hope I can find time for that this year ^^

Date: 2023-03-04 02:12 am (UTC)I love other means of fanworks when my computer worked I made icons, banners, fanfic covers even moodboards and the like. It was cool. I took a chance on the gifs. Now without a computer, I'm just dreaming about it again.
Very nice of you to say that you want to complete multi-chapter stories and bring your old works to AO3. It's a big goal. I wish all the best that works out.
I really appreciate your effort and your person (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
