So, I've been a bit busier lately - I actually managed a good number of fics for week 2 of the Small Fandoms Drabblethon, mostly due to finishing a few at the weekend, but then I didn't have time to post a round-up 😂 And this week I only managed one, so I'm grouping weeks 2 and 3 together.
I'm hoping to write a couple more before the end of the month, but even if I don't manage it, I'm really pleased with everything I've written this month for the drabblethon! And I've had a lot of thoughts and feelings about drabbles and the fandoms I wrote for in the process.
What I really enjoy about the Small Fandoms Drabblethon, I realised, is that I get that Yuletide-esque joy of thinking of a small fandom I'd love to write for - but I don't have to wait until November/December to do something with that urge! I was thinking about Just Listen, a favourite novel by Sarah Dessen, and my headcanon that Annabel would eventually agree to take a radio preparation course and sign up for her own show, and I realised it was a great subject for a drabble.
I like that I wound up making this a Kirsten & Annabel sister moment instead of an Annabel/Owen romantic moment, which was my original idea.
I wrote a pair of drabbles for this idea, which came from reading A Closed and Common Orbit back in November and wishing that the book had returned to the subject of Sidra's incomplete wave tattoo. Again, though, perfect subject for a drabble!
The drabbles explore two different scenarios: one where Sidra kept her tattoo incomplete (which I think is most likely to be canon), and one where she completed it without nanobot ink (my personal headcanon). I wanted to explore the thoughts and reasoning she might have for each choice.
I'm so pleased that the Drabblethon has led to me writing for Starship Iris again. I'm particularly pleased with this fic as I took a prompt from my friend (the same friend who prompted me "Don't be ridiculous" and 'pink nightmare' in the first set), 'glass shard', and spun it into an idea that I'd been meaning to write for ages: a reflection on Sana and the loss of the Rumor, post-season 1. There's so much to dig into, and I liked exploring this small piece of it.
Hokay, so this one requires some Explaining xD I love the "tell me the name of god" mushroom meme, and I was gleefully explaining it to my partner, who'd never heard of it, when it occurred to me that the line "You cannot kill me in a way that matters" would make a badass final line for a member of a resistance movement to deliver to the bad guys.
I thought, either I could write an original story around this one line OR I could give it to a character who's already part of a canonical resistance movement. Thus: *flourish* RJ McCabe, who's also my favourite, so they get the badass death line.
It is somehow the darkest thing I've yet written and it's a 100-word drabble, which I think is the only way I'll ever write anything dark - if I can just suggest without lingering on it. I feel a bit odd slapping robust content warnings on a 100-word fic, but nevertheless.

- Ready (Just Listen - Sarah Dessen): After her last show filling in for Owen, Annabel still doesn't think she's ready to take radio hosting any further. A phone conversation with her sister makes her reconsider. (DW) (SqWA)

- the fear within me is beyond anything your soul can make (The Strange Case of Starship Iris): “You know, the penalty for treason is death,” no-longer-acting Agent Goodman said, conversationally.
