Some updates & a polyam-thology!
Jun. 30th, 2024 07:56 pmIt seems like I tend to get my act together enough to make a post around the end of every month xD I've got some post ideas that you'll hopefully see in July, but before that, here's a few things I've been up to...
At the end of May I wrote a Starship Iris fanfic for the Small Fandoms Surprise Scramble, the old stars are of no importance, which is on Dreamwidth at that link there or on AO3 (or even Tumblr if you're so inclined xD). This was the first non-drabble fic that I'd written for Starship Iris this year (and since 2022), so it was really nice to write and post, not least because it centres on one of my favourite characters from the podcast, RJ McCabe.
The Small Fandoms Surprise Scramble gave me a great incentive to think up and work on this little idea, with a deadline to make sure I got my finger out to finish it. I was originally going to write some drabble ideas I didn't get around to during the Small Fandoms Drabblethon (same comm, different event!), and technically I still could, because
kalloway has mentioned that the Scramble is still quietly open for new works between now and the next event in August. So, if anyone sees this and thinks they'd like to make something, you're in time! Here's a link to the event details.
In some truly uncanny timing, a few weeks after I posted my fic (and just after it got a lovely boost on Tumblr from someone else who's still active in the fandom), Starship Iris creator Jessica Best dropped a surprise Behind the Scenes episode on Patreon - an interview with the voice actor who plays RJ McCabe 😍 Apparently it was recorded back in 2021 when season 2 was still airing, and it's not clear why it didn't go out at the time - Jess couldn't remember herself - but it's been released now nearly three years after the fact.
It feels bittersweet, because I love hearing it and it's so nice to get some "new" fandom material in the lull between seasons 2 and 3 (season 3 is yet to be released, though the scripts have been distributed to the voice actors and I think the ETA is next year?), but I wish it could have come out when it was meant to, as I think more people would have heard it then. Jackie Andrews (McCabe's VA) has some brilliant thoughts about gender and nonbinary representation that deserve to be heard and get some comments from fans, plus there's a lot of really great character insight there. I'd love to blog about it on Tumblr, but as many people don't have access to the source material, I'd be quoting from something that most people haven't heard ^^;
And now for something completely different
I don't really talk about non-fanfic writing on this blog (except for a brief allusion during the Snowflake Challenge to working on original fic in the second half of 2023), but I'm about to! :D I don't know if any friends here have heard of Duck Prints Press, but it's a small press focused on publishing fannish writers specifically, with a heavy emphasis on queer and generally diverse stories. The Press (DPP for short) has published a few novellas, but their main bread and butter is anthologies, of which they've published six so far, all crowdfunded, with the seventh currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. And I'm in it!
It's called Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica and as the title might have given away, it is smut xD Don't worry about clicking on that Kickstarter link as the imagery there is all SFW, although some shots of the cover are slightly suggestive, but Kickstarter wouldn't permit anything more racy, anyway xD
This was really a foray into completely new territory for me because none of my published fic is smut (except for one extremely cracky fic that I don't count), and I also haven't worked on anything original in years, so I was really doing this one on Hard Mode xD But I got really into it! I like my characters a lot and almost feel like I'm fannish about them, which is a funny feeling to have. I'm pretty sure it's cool for me to share that it's a 'band fic', titled Getting the Band Together, and it's a foursome - M/NB/F/NB.
There's no obligation for anyone here to back the campaign, but if you know someone who might be interested, it'd be amazing if you could share a link - we're 86% funded so far! (Edit 02/07: We are now fully-funded! Woohoo!!!) And hitting the stretch goals means some cool campaign rewards plus more money for the artists taking part in the project, depending on how much we raise ^^
Or if you feel like getting your hands on something cool now, DPP is also doing a bundle of 18 queer short stories for Pride month!
Anyway - that's all from me this entry, but I hope you're all keeping well! Please do drop by the comments to say hello, I'd love to hear from you <3
