Soundtrack nostalgia 🏴‍☠️

Recently, while in a group chat, I made a Pirates of the Caribbean joke (some material that we were working with had the phrase "more like guidelines" which is a frequently-used description of the Pirates' Code in the first film) and it gave me the urge to listen to the PotC soundtrack. I have the soundtrack from the first film, though I'd yet to play it on this laptop apparently which is a bit sad (I've had this laptop since 2020 xD)

As soon as I hit play I was thrown back in time to my Pirates of the Caribbean obsession, when I would fire up the film on my parents' TV (which had a DVD player) and watch it over and over every night. It remains one of my all-time favourite films, and the soundtrack is so good - I don't know it quite well enough to picture every single scene that goes with the music, but some moments are definitely there in my head as I'm listening, and the drama and excitement comes through in the scoring.

When I was in Pirates fandom in 2006-ish, I remember that the Hide the Rum forum had a poll where people voted for their favourite track in the PotC soundtrack. Most of the votes went to 'He's A Pirate' (the end credits music), which I found a bit boring and predictable xD I mean, it's great and it has the theme! But it seems like an 'obvious' choice xD There was also some love for 'Will And Elizabeth', which is a really good track - lots of the theme coming through in this one, and it's got a great pace to it.

I was the only person holding out for 'Swords Crossed', which remains my favourite track of the film. It's so cinematic. In this essay I will- okay, not really xD But it starts off all quiet and slow, and it's got this little melody about 45 seconds in that cuts through everything, and then it just builds and builds and builds, getting to this final crescendo and then it's all ACTION AND ADVENTURE augh I love it. Here, you can listen to what I mean:

I have a lot of fond fandom memories linked to music - a couple of years later, I was in The Road to El Dorado fandom, and I painstakingly downloaded (*cough* legally of course) or recorded songs from the film and listened to them constantly - I particularly loved 'It's Tough to Be A God' (great song) and I even learned the lyrics in Spanish xD

(...I have to go and listen to that one now :D)

Not all fandoms are heavily musical (film fandoms and in particular musical films, like RtED or Encanto, one of my later fandoms, will obviously have a musical component), but even when they aren't, I can often find some music to fixate on xD The Starship Iris fic that I linked in my last entry, the old stars are of no importance, is titled after a song sung in-universe and is basically a love letter to that song (which is performed by the cast and it's really amazing). There are a few pieces of music original to the podcast, which have been released on Bandcamp or Soundcloud, and the person who created the show's end credits theme (from end season 1 onwards) also made it available for fans to download after they discovered we liked it!

What are your favourite film soundtracks (or themes or pieces of music)? Do you ever find yourself interacting with fandoms in a musical capacity - like fanmixes, playlists, fan songs or just music from the canon?

Honestly when I think of favorite soundtracks I mostly think of video game soundtracks though there's certainly amazing movie soundtracks out there 🤔 And I love musicals too, I used to have a ton of movie/game/musical music on my ipod back in the day sjfhdskjfs

I used to make a ton of fanmixes too! And I found most of my new music through fanmixes lmao, this was all back in like, the livejournal heyday. I haven't made a mix in a very long time though because I don't listen to nearly enough new music that isn't kpop these days. I actually started working on a couple mixes a few months ago but never finished them...maybe I should go back and try to refine them.

Oh I guess to actually answer your question about favorites sjhdksjhf this is niche but I was OBSESSED with the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie OST as a kid and it still slaps to this day. It has strings, it has rock guitar and drums, it has an orchestral choir thing going on. 100% perfect no notes.

I had a lot of fun making fanmixes, it's great when you find songs that reallyyy fit. And honestly they don't need to be that long if you wanted to make some! I'd consider 5-8 songs a mini mix, which totally counts. You'd be surprised how easy it is to justify putting a song on a mix that is only sort of tangentially related to your blorbo/ship sjdhfsjhfds

since I'm already here and talking about video game OSTs let me link a few more faves haha. do you have any you'd rec? I love listening to game OSTs as background music.

Journey OST - this is one of the most gorgeous soundtracks I've ever heard, I would put this on while doing homework or writing or whatever

Bastion OST - Darren Korb is the Supergiant Games composer and I am sooo in awe how good his work with them is. he recorded the Bastion OST in his apartment closet. The Hades OST I think is the "best" of theirs (and you should listen to it if you haven't), but Bastion was my first Supergiant game and I've listened to this OST a thousand times.

Assassin's Creed 2 OST - one of my favorite triple A studio OSTs. also my favorite of the AC games haha but there's just something about this soundtrack that's so lovely. and the action tunes slap.

Oh I'm so glad! I haven't read Fence but I'd love to listen to your mix if/when you post it! Sometimes you just need to sit on a bunch of half-finished mixes and let them stew for a while until the perfect addition appears before you.

(Obligatory please please play Hades if you can it's such an excellent game all around.)

omg the .hack//infection music is bringing back memories, I loved that game so much. Spyro is a great series too, I played the original 3 games sooo many times. the Spyro music is a lot of fun, excellent choice!

I've never played a Civ game or any AC game besides Pocket Camp, but the AC music I've heard is always so charming. this 9AM song is really nice background music haha. the Civ II OST is giving me Age of Empires vibes which I did play a lot back in the day.
