* Staring at another wolf is aggressive, a challenge.
* Not making eye contact at all is submissive and can invite aggression.
* Look, look away, and look back: this is how two wolves of relatively similar rank greet each other when they don't want to pick a fight.

Occasionally I still see signature lines on messages in mailing lists, but those have become rare -- which is a shame, because I'll read things in my inbox but I forget to go out and visit websites to look for newsletters.
